Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
